THE SUPER 14 FINAL: An Un-BULL-ievable day in Soweto

on May.30, 2010, under South Africa

story continued from Blue Bulls fever and Monte Casino

We got to the ground and drove in the main gates as Adnaan had VIP parking. We had to wait outside the ground as he tried to organise tickets. He asked Vodacom, the media and anyone he could. It was freezing cold, the rain was threatening and as 5 o’clock kickoff approached it was getting darker.

We saw John Smit, and Precy Montgomery arrive. We saw the coaches just before kick-off and then a massive entourage with mega security as President Jacob Zuma arrived. Wow was that an entrance! Still no tickets for poor old us…

Eventually after the game had been going 20 minutes we decided to leave as we were cold and starving. There was the option of a train, until we saw the train go past. Yikes…filled with locals (no disrespect intended, but probably not the safest option for us!)

There were no buses and the only option was a South African taxi. If you’ve never seen the taxi vans before, they drive like maniacs and there is a complex hand signal you have to give them that indicates where you want to go. They are not what you’d consider safe at all.

So we approached the Police and a nice officer suggested we get driven to the Police station and then they could hopefully take us to Monte Casino.

He was concerned for our safety, the problem being there was not a lot of spare staff to take us. Eventually he told us he couldn’t help, so we were on our own.

At half time we tried to leave and noticed we had managed to get to the upper level and managed to sneak into the ground. It was a dream come true as we watched the second half of the Super 14 final, a historic event for South Africa.

Our team won, we took some great photos and we were part of history. It was Un-BULL-ievable.

After the game we contacted the Stormers doctors’ wife and Chippie Solomons the Stormers manager said we could ride back on the bus with them.

There was one bus for the Stormers and another for the wives/girlfirends/family etc. We even had a police escort (which consisted of 3 police vehicles clearing the way for us!). Obviously they were all disappointed, but we arrived back with the Stormers who were probably disappointed so we didn’t annoy them at all!

WOW…That’s soo cool, I’m so happy you got in and saw the second half, how did you manage to go back in that bus? do you know the doctors wife personally? did she arrange it? You guys are great just going for it and I’m so glad you being cautious about safety.

      Hi Nayna Mame,

It is all about who you know! By being introduced to Chippie and travelling with Janette (the doctor’s wife) we at least had a contact.

It was a very dumb plan however, but we got lucky! Very lucky, and at least we’ll have the memory for a long, long time, which will be very significant for SA as the years go by I am sure.
